１．研究会の概要
JACET（大学英語教育学会）教材開発研究会は、
１）教材開発のための理論的基盤の構築
２）大学生および大学英語教育関係者のニーズに応える英語教材の検討・設計・開発の実践を活動の2本の柱としています。
理論的基盤の構築においては、研究会のメンバーやゲストの先生方による講演会や研究会を実施し、教材開発に関する理論研究や実践研究に取り組んでいます。英語教材開発の実践では、大学生用の英語教材の出版を目指して活動を行っています。
関西を中心に活動をしていますが、講演会・研究会は、主にオンラインを用いて実施しております。参加ご希望の先生は、下記のブログサイトからお申し込みください。先生方のご参加をお待ちしております。
２．2023年度の活動報告
2023 年度は、教材についての検討・設計・開発の活動に集中して、プレゼンテーション教材、及び、英語ニュース教材の開発と出版に取り組んできました。オンラインツールなど技術革新のために英語教育を取り巻く環境も年々変化を遂げていますが、本研究会は、大学生の学習効果が上がるための教材とは何かという本質を見失うことなく、英語教育に貢献することを目指した教材を設計・開発することが重要であろうと考えています。そのため、2023 年からの例会ではオンライン会議やメールを通じて、研究会会員による提案や意見交換を活発に行い、その結果を執筆原稿にも反映させるべく、綿密な検討を重ねてきました。出版という具体的な成果が得られるまでは地道な作業でしたが、会員同士の活発な交流や有意義な意見交換・情報交換ができたこともまた大きな収穫でした。2023 年度の最終的な成果として、Power Presentation [New Edition] と CNN Short News for Listening Business という２冊の教科書を完成させ、出版致しました。
３. 2024年度の活動予定
2024年度は、教材についての検討・設計・開発の活動に集中して取り組んできました。例会では、オンライン会議やメールを通じて、研究会会員による意見交換を活発に行い、新しい教材開発に向けて、綿密な検討を重ねてきました。新しい教材開発に向けての土台づくりが主たる活動になりました。また、2024年度も、理論的基盤構築のために会員およびゲストスピーカーによるオンラインでの講演会を実施いたしました。演題は次の通りです。
１．「英語3活動スパイラル型授業：高校と大学での実践から−中高大連携に向けて−」
杉本喜孝先生（帝塚山学院大学 准教授）
２．「映画で考える『男性被害』」
國友万裕先生（同志社大学 非常勤講師）
講演会では、両先生に、英語教育や教材開発に関する有意義な情報も共有していただきました。また、例会でも活発な意見交換・情報交換が行われ、充実した時間となりました。
なお、本研究会主催のオンライン講演会では、支部広報、本部のご協力により全国のJACET会員に案内配信ができ、地域の枠を超えて多くの先生方にご参加いただくことができました。この場をお借りして御礼申し上げます。
４．2025年度の予定
本年度は、教材開発に関する理論研究および実践研究を中心に活動を行うことになりました。研究会の会員やゲストスピーカーによる講演会や研究発表など、いくつかの活動を予定しております。
すでに決定しているものとしては、下の２つの活動があります。その他は、決まり次第お知らせしますので、ブログでご確認ください。
１）2025年8月25日（月）の例会（オンライン開催）
大学生用プレゼンテーション教材を使用した英語授業に関する研究発表を予定しています。なお、この教材は、本研究会で開発され、出版されたものとなります。
２）2025年10月18日（土）のJACET関西第２回講演会（オンライン開催）
本研究会が企画を担当する講演会です。投野由紀夫先生（東京外国語大学教授）を講師にお迎えし、コーパス研究から教材開発への道筋をお話しいただく予定です。
5．新入会希望者へのメッセージ
多くのJACET会員の先生方は、英語授業において、様々な工夫を凝らしたタスクやアクティビティを展開されていると思います。時には、ニュースやエッセイなどから新たな教材を作ったり、効果的なe-Learningや、学習の定着を測るためのテストなど、様々な「教材」を開発しておられるのではないでしょうか。
本研究会で、先生方の教材開発実践を共有し、より効果的な教材開発を目指し、共同研究を行いませんか。どの教材のどの部分が、どのように良かったのか、悪かったのか。なぜ、その結果になったのか。どうすればより効果的な教材が開発できるのかなど、それぞれの実践経験を他のメンバーと共有することで、新たな研究の扉が開くこともあります。
また、本研究会は、授業実践における先生方のアイディアを体系化し、それを教材として纏め、出版を目指して活動を行っています。出版活動は、時間と手間がかかりますが、先生方の独自のアイディアや自作の文章を、教材を使用される全国の教員と共有することにつながります。さらに、教材の企画から出版に至るまでのプロセスやノウハウを共有することは、よりよい授業実践や教授法の開発、また、理論的基盤構築のためにも役立ちます。
例会は主にオンラインで実施しています。地域や経験を問わず、教材開発研究に興味をお持ちの先生方のご参加をお待ちしております。

1. Main Theme
The Material Design and Development SIG focuses on the following two main areas:
- Establishing a theoretical foundation for teaching material development
- Practicing the design and development of English teaching materials that meet the needs of university students and those involved in university-level English education
To build a theoretical foundation, the SIG organizes lectures and study sessions led by its members and invited guest speakers, engaging in both theoretical and practical research on teaching material development. In terms of practical development, the SIG aims to publish English teaching materials for university students.
Although the group is based in the Kansai region, lectures and study sessions are mainly held online. If you would like to participate, please sign up via the blog site linked below. We look forward to your participation.
2. Summary of Activity in 2023
In FY2023, we focused our efforts on the examination, design, and development of teaching materials, specifically working on the creation and publication of presentation materials and English news-based materials. Although the environment surrounding English education continues to evolve each year due to technological advancements such as online tools, our SIG believes it is crucial not to lose sight of the fundamental question: What kinds of teaching materials truly enhance university students’ learning outcomes? With this in mind, we have been committed to designing and developing materials that contribute meaningfully to English education.
Since 2023, we have actively exchanged ideas and proposals among members through online meetings and email correspondence during our regular sessions. These discussions were carefully reflected in the writing process, resulting in thorough and detailed material development. Although the process leading up to publication required steady and persistent work, the active interaction and meaningful exchange of ideas and information among members proved to be invaluable.
As the final outcomes of our 2023 activities, we completed and published two textbooks: Power Presentation [New Edition] and CNN Short News for Listening Business.
2. Summary of Activity in 2024
In FY 2024, we concentrated our efforts on the examination, design, and development of teaching materials. During our regular meetings, we engaged in active exchanges of ideas among members through online conferences and email correspondence, conducting detailed discussions in preparation for the development of new teaching materials. Laying the groundwork for future material development became the primary focus of our activities.
To support the establishment of a theoretical foundation, we held online lectures delivered by both members and guest speakers. The lecture topics were as follows:
- “Spiral-Based English Lessons Using the Three Activity Model: Practices in High Schools and Universities—Toward Collaboration Across Secondary and Higher Education”
– Mr. Yoshitaka Sugimoto (Tezuyakayama Gakuin University, Assoc. Prof.) - “Thinking about Male Victimization (‘Abused Men’) through Movies”
– Mr. Kazuhiro Kunitomo (Doshisha University, Part-time Lecturer)
In these lectures, both speakers shared valuable insights related to English education and teaching material development. Our regular meetings also featured lively exchanges of opinions and information, making for highly productive sessions.
Furthermore, thanks to the support of the regional publicity team and the JACET headquarters, announcements for these online lectures were distributed to JACET members nationwide. As a result, we were able to welcome many participants beyond regional boundaries. We would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere appreciation.
3. Plan for 2025
This year, our activities will primarily focus on both theoretical and practical research related to teaching material development. We are planning several events, including lectures and research presentations by SIG members and guest speakers.
Two events have already been confirmed, as listed below. Details of additional activities will be announced as they are finalized, so please check our blog for updates.
- Regular Meeting on Monday, August 25, 2025 (Online)
A research presentation is scheduled, focusing on English lessons using a presentation textbook designed for university students. This textbook was developed and published by our SIG. - The 2nd JACET Kansai Lecture of 2025 on Saturday, October 18 (Online)
This lecture, organized by our SIG, will feature Professor Yukio Tono (Tokyo University of Foreign Studies) as the guest speaker. He will discuss the pathway from corpus research to teaching material development.
4. Message to Prospective Members
Many JACET members are likely incorporating a wide range of creative tasks and activities in their English classes. Some may be developing new teaching materials using news articles or essays, designing effective e-learning content, or creating tests to measure learning retention. In essence, many educators are already engaged in various forms of material development.
Would you be interested in sharing your practices and engaging in collaborative research on teaching material development through our SIG? By exchanging ideas about which parts of a material worked well or did not, why certain results occurred, and how more effective materials might be created, we can open new doors for research through the collective reflection on our teaching experiences.
Our SIG also aims to systematize such classroom-based ideas into concrete teaching materials, with the goal of publication. Although the publication process requires time and effort, it allows your original ideas and personally written content to be shared with educators across the country. Furthermore, sharing the process and know-how from material planning to publication can contribute to improving teaching practices, instructional methods, and even the theoretical foundations of English education.
Our regular meetings are mainly held online. We welcome the participation of teachers from all regions and backgrounds who are interested in teaching material development.
