「機械翻訳を英語教育に活用するために~TILTからMTILTへ~」

山田優先生（立教大学）

東京都出身。米国ウエストバージニア大学大学院修士（言語学）。立教大学大学院異文化コミュニケーション研究科 博士（異文化コミュニケーション学／翻訳通訳学）。フォードモーター社内通訳者、産業翻訳者を経て、株式会社 翻訳ラボを設立。今は、翻訳通訳研究に没頭中。研究の関心は、通訳翻訳研究全般、訳出プロセス、翻訳テクノロジー論（機械翻訳、ポストエディット含む）、メディア翻訳、TILT（翻訳の外国語教育への応用）。 日本通訳翻訳学会理事歴任。八楽株式会社 チーフ・エバンジェリスト。一般社団法人アジア太平洋機械翻訳協会（AAMT）理事。

5. 概要

AIの発展により翻訳精度が飛躍的に向上した機械翻訳（MT＝Machine Translation）を、英語教育に応用・活用しようとする動きが高まってきている。ライティング学習支援を中心に、すでにMTの活用とその学習効果に関する実践報告も数多く出ている。しかし、実際にMTをクラスルームで活用するとなると、教える側としては不安も多いだろう。 このような状況に鑑み、本発表では、MTを英語教育に活用するために、1）教員として心得ておくべき事をまとめ共有し、２）先行研究とこれまでの発表者の実践をベースに、効果的かつ実用的なMTの英語学習のための活用方法を提案する。1）については、MTの技術的仕組み、実力、翻訳エラーの問題、サービス利用の際の著作権・倫理の問題を再確認する。2）については、関連先行研究と実践報告の内容を踏まえ、翻訳の外国語教育への応用（TILT＝Translation in Language Teaching）の概念をベースに、MTを活用したMTILT（MT+TILT）を提案する。

4. Lecturer:

Prof. Masaru Yamada (College/Graduate School of Intercultural Communication at Rikkyo University)

Masaru Yamada is a Professor at the College/Graduate School of Intercultural Communication at Rikkyo University. Drawing on insights from his experiences as a linguist and project manager in the translation industry, he explores translation processes, translation technologies (including CAT, MT, and PE), and TILT (Translation in Language Teaching). He serves as a board member of the Asia-Pacific Association for Machine Translation (AAMT) and a member of the Editorial Board of The Interpreter and Translator Trainer. He is a co-editor of Metalanguages for Dissecting Translation Processes: Theoretical Development and Practical Applications (Routledge, 2022 forthcoming).

5.Abstract

Machine translation (MT) has dramatically improved, and it is increasingly being applied and utilized in teaching English. Numerous reports have been published on the use of MT, mainly in students’ writing support. However, teachers may have concerns about using MT in the actual classroom. This presentation will first provide things English teachers must know about the application of MT in teaching, including its characteristics and quality limitations, and copyright/ethical issues in using the free MT service. Then, the author will propose a method called MTILT (MT+TILT) by drawing on ideas from Translation in Language Teaching and explaining the effective and practical use of MT in English teaching.
